Geotechnical Requirements

When submitting requests, please provice general grade and slope stability information for each site. Include any data on outcroppings (boulders), if any. Comment on the suitability of the site to support mechanical equipment (backhoe, drilling rig, etc.) Provide a plot plan and site location map with structure and any possible obstructions or site restrictions.

Geotechnical Data Required from Reports:

Soil Properties:
The soil report should provide the following minimum information:(List all applicable factors of safety)
  1. Allowable Bearing Pressure: values vs. depth and settlement expected, mainly at tower base. (All structure types)

  2. Allowable Passive Pressure: values vs. depth. (All structure types)

  3. Allowable Skin Friction: values vs. depth. (S.S. & Guyed towers only)

  4. Angle of Internal Friction. (All structure types)

  5. Unit Weight of the Soil. Buoyant unit weight, if submerged. (All structure types)

  6. Cohesion of the Soil: values vs. depth, if any. (All structure types)

  7. Lateral Modulus of Subgrade Reaction: values vs. depth. (Monopoles only)

  8. If rock anchors are anticipated:

    1. Ultimate Rock Shear Strength

    2. RQD

    3. Unit Weight of Rock

    4. Rock/Concrete Friction

    5. Rock Engagement Angle
Boring Logs:
  1. Date, sampling methods, & number of samples.

  2. Soil strata classification per USCS and their depth.

  3. Depth of free water encountered: Groundwater elevation for design.

  4. Standard penetration test blow counts.

  5. Maximum & average frost penetration depth.

  6. Unit weight of the soil, buoyant unit weight, if submerged.
Recommendations:
  1. Foundation system best suited for existing soil conditions.

  2. Alternative foundation system that can also be considered.

  3. Construction problems anticipated, including any casing required, etc.

  4. Any other variables that will affect the installation and design.

  5. Depth of saturated soil, if expected.

  6. Soil resistivity, if any special corrosion mitigating measures are required.

If any other questions arise, please feel free to contact Valmont Microflect for further discussion.
