In 1946, Valmont founder Robert B. Daugherty returned from WWII and began looking for good business opportunities. He invested in a machinery design and manufacturing business that quickly set a standard in the production of machinery products for agriculture.
Daugherty had a knack for finding opportunity in adversity. During the farm depression of 1952, he began looking for ways to diversify the company, and he recognized the potential of an innovative irrigation concept - the center pivot. Daugherty and his engineers eventually refined the concept into one of the 20th Century's most important advances in agriculture.
The center pivot relied on quality pipe, and in 1959 Valmont began manufacturing its own steel pipe and tubing. "We found that it wasn't always easy to get the pipe we required when we needed it and at the right price. So we decided to make our own," Daugherty said. The first product was six-inch pipe. From that beginning, the company saw an opportunity to not only manufacture pipe for its irrigation systems, but also to develop markets throughout the United States for original equipment manufactures (OEMs), steel service centers, and for use in both private and public projects.
In the 1960s, Valmont's development and use of high-speed, resistance welding for tubular products led directly to the manufacture of tapered tubes for outdoor lighting, traffic signals and other applications. A production line was designed which continually cut, formed and welded at high speeds and with very low labor requirements. Valmont expanded into the manufacture of large tubular structures for the electrical utility industry during the 1970s.
Valmont's pole manufacturing expertise led naturally to the acquisition of a number of steel and aluminum pole manufacturing businesses around the world. Today, Valmont produces one of the largest and most diverse lines of lighting, power and communications standards and poles in the industry. Valmont Structures continues Bob Daugherty's legacy of innovation by designing, manufacturing and delivering quality poles for any application, on spec and on time.
